No Human Rights for Elderly
18 June 2012
The Human Rights Act does not protect the elderly in care homes and hospitals. The only cover for the elderly under the Human Rights Act is for those residents whose fees are paid by their local authority or patients in NHS Institutions. The study has revealed that the elderly often have their dignity taken away from them by the staff and that some patients/residents are being fed by nurses/carers at mealtimes to save time.
A representative from Saga is reported to have stated that the staff should “treat patients as if they were members of their own family. For far too long we have failed to treat frail older people properly. There seems to be a lack of empathy and an impatience which can do tremendous harm to those needing care”.
The Care Services Minister said “Kindness and compassion, dignity and respect must be central to care. From October, the Government will ban age discrimination in health and social care”.
