Fines for Parents of Truants
16 April 2012
New proposals being considered by the Government which would mean that parents could face fines of up to £120.00 which would be deducted from their Child Benefit if they are not paid. There are claims that an increasing number of parents are allowing their children to miss lessons and then not pay the fines and the penalties are having no effect.
Currently, if parents are issued with a fine, they have 28 days to pay the same and then it is doubled. After 42 days, if the fine is still unpaid the penalty notice has to be withdrawn and the only option is for the Local Authority to prosecute the parents. Under the new plans, a fine of £60.00 would be imposed and if this is not paid within 28 days the fine would be doubled and would automatically be recoverable from the Child Benefit. If no Child Benefit is received, and the fines are not paid, the monies owing would be recoverable through the Courts.
