Physiotherapists Banned From Touching Patients
12 April 2012
NHS plans were branded “barmy” yesterday after it was revealed that physiotherapists could no longer use their hands to massage aching joints and limbs but had to tell patients to look up some treatments on the internet and then exercise at home. Advice and guidance leaflets are replacing the normal treatment after a review of services.
The Chartered Society for Physiotherapy Chief Executive is reported to have said “They seem to have invented a new form of physiotherapy that no one has heard of: do-not-touch-physiotherapy. Physiotherapists can’t touch you at all under this system. It is deeply unscientific. It is completely barmy, which means the only solution will be to go to the private sector and pay”.
The Society has asked the primary care trusts about services and there was only one who did not offer the hands-on treatment. This care trust is reported to have claimed “This service enables all patients to take control of their condition and get better quicker”.
