Allotment Taken Away From Pensioner
07 April 2012
A pensioner who lived for his allotment has received a letter from his local council giving him three weeks to remove the allotment as they state his bad hip was a safety hazard. The council state that his hip previously gave out while he was on the plot.
The pensioner, who is the chairman of the local allotment society stated that he was perfectly capable of looking after his allotment, which he has had for the last six years, and is reported to have stated “I think they have someone else lined up for it. It seems strange I get a letter at this time of year with just three weeks’ notice. They have not even told me what health and safety rules I have supposedly broken”.
The Council Leader is reported to have insisted “We have a duty of care. If this guy’s hip pops out again as it has done in the past and he ends up in a wheelchair, what would people say? They will ask why we didn’t stop him. We don’t want to be accused of neglect. The popular allotments have a waiting list – with 24 locals wanting one”.
