Under new planned legislation which is expected to be announced in next month’s Queens speech, GCHQ will be able to monitor emails and website visits on demand.   Although GCHQ would be able to look at the numbers dialled or email addresses and also the duration of the calls, it would not, however, include the content of any phone call or email.

This major expansion of powers is being prepared by Ministers and is being branded as an attack on privacy, and gave more power to the Government to “snoop” on its citizens.    Ministers state that it is essential that both Police and security services are able to gain access to communication data in order to tackle terrorism and protect the public.
