The Tax Refund Company, rebate, how to I make a calm for uniform tax credit

If you wear a uniform or protective clothing at work, and have to wash it yourself you can claim tax relief of up to £60 a year.

There are also other tax-deductible expenses you may be able to claim for, such as the cost of professional fees, specialist tools or travel in relation to your work.

Why are people missing out on extra money from the tax office?

It's easy to claim money back from the last four years, however there are companies who are making easy money from your previous tax overpayments.

One of these companies is The Tax Refund Company who dealt with 200,000 claims last year, they are endorsed by unions. The Tax Refund Company and others like them take about 40 per cent of successful claim as commission.

Don't pay to claim your tax rebate

Claiming your uniform tax rebate or any other tax deductible expenses is very easy to do, all you have to do is write a letter to HMRC.

Flat allowances like Uniform tax rebates are free and easy to claim, however hundreds of thousands of people  are either not claiming or paying to get back what's theirs.

How do I know if I am eligible for a Uniform tax rebate?

  • if you work in a profession which requires a uniform
  • you are required to wear it while you are working
  • you paid income tax in the year you are claiming for
  • you have to clean, repair or replace it yourself –

You can claim uniform tax rebate

Unfortunately you can't claim if your employer provides you with facilities to wash your uniform, even if you do not use such facilities.

If you are a member of the Armed Forces you don't need to claim a rebate as this has already been accounted for in your tax code.

How much could I get back?

The amount you can claim varies depending on what profession you are in. For 2012/2013 the uniform maintenance allowance is £60 –

  • if you pay basic rate of tax which is 20 per cent you will get £12 back (20% of £60)
  • high rate payers will receive £24 (40% of £60)

If you wear a specialist uniform your maximum allowance is £140

If your annual uniform laundry bill is higher than average and you have proof you might be able to claim more than the standard payments.

How can I claim for a uniform rebate?

To claim for the first time or if you paid over £1,000 to maintain your uniform you simply write to the HMRC.

Send the letter to the tax office on your payslip/P60, or to the generic address HM Revenue & Customs, Pay As You Earn, PO Box 1970. Liverpool, L75 1WX. Write 'Repayment Claim' on the envelope.

In the letter mention

  • employer's name, address and dates for the past four years
  • occupation, job title and industry sector
  • any laundry facilities provided by the employer
  • any payment provided to cover the laundry costs
  • details of why the uniform cannot be worn outside
  • whether you want the rebate to be deducted from the current year's tax or you would like a cheque

It will take about five weeks to process your claim.

Once the claim is processed you will receive a letter telling you how much your entitled to.

Each year you will have to reclaim by simply ringing HMRC on 0845 400 0627 or 01355 359022 between 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday or 8am to 4pm on Saturday.
